Helpers sought to clean up wildlife sanctuary

ATTLEBORO - The Massachusetts Audubon Society is looking for volunteers to help clean up the newly-created Attleboro Springs Wildlife Sanctuary.

Tara Henrichon, Audubon director of Attleboro Springs and the adjacent Oak Knoll Wildlife Sanctuary, said a cleanup will be held on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

"Volunteers are needed to clean up debris, yard waste and other trash on the site," she said.

Coffee and snacks will be provided.

Both sanctuaries are off Park Street, but the Attleboro Springs Sanctuary is new thanks to a conservation deed restriction on land owned by LaSalette Shrine. A state grant of $495,000 plus $290,000 in private donations is paying for the building of trails, development of programs and the establishment of an endowment to maintain the more than 100 acres at Attleboro Springs.

Audubon oversees both properties. The new sanctuary is expected to open in the summer, Henrichon said.

For more information or to sign up call 508-223-3060 or e-mail Henrichon at oakknoll@massaudubon.org.
