Write-in candidates hoping for some ink

ATTLEBORO - Every election, a small number of voters write in fictional names on the ballot, such as Mickey Mouse, but this year there are at least two people trying to run legitimate write-in campaigns in the Attleboro city election.

John Brederson of May Street, a local business owner, said he is running as a write-in candidate for mayor in Tuesday's election, while Gerald Chase of Nick Rock Road is running for city councilor at-large.

Chase, the current Ward 5 councilor, lost a preliminary election for the seat, but is now trying to win citywide as a write-in for an at-large post.

Mary Ann Drain of the city election commission said that for a write-in vote to be counted, it must be clear who the voter is writing in.

The best way to make it clear is write in the name in legible handwriting and fill in with a pencil the bubble next to the name. However, if the bubble is not filled in, but the name is legible it will still count, she said.

Brederson said he wanted to make sure voters spell his name properly.

Drain said the address of the candidate is helpful, but not necessary.
