BOSTON - Having senior standards for excellence like Kelly McCabe, Michelle Jenssen and Meg Ferreira on the roster and an emerging superstar in sophomore Emily Broyles, it's not hard to fathom how and why the Mansfield High girls' winter track team emerged from the pack Saturday to claim the Hockomock League Championship Meet title.

McCabe won the shot put event by six feet, Jenssen set an MHS record in winning the 600, Ferreira personally accounted for 16 points and Broyles rewrote the MHS record in the 300 meter run.

All told, it was another banner day for Mansfield, which totaled 83 points to outdistance runner-up Oliver Ames (75) at the Reggie Lewis Center.

"We had to move up some spots," reiterated Mansfield High coach Derek Ellis, whose Hornets had multiple placements in the 300, 600 and two mile runs, the shot put and high jump, while Ferreira and Jenssen still had spring in their legs to lead the 4x400 relay team to a first place finish.

The Hornets, however, may have taken two big strides in winning the meet as Kathy Olson and Jess Moore (a personal best 12:10) finished within five seconds of each other to finish 2-4 respectively and earn 12 points for Mansfield in the two-mile run.
McCabe, under the tutelage of New England renown assistant coach Steve Cameron, uncorked a throw of 37-6 to win the shot put.

Ferreira retained her claim as being the best hurdler in the Hockomock League, winning that event at 8.66.

Jenssen delivered a stirring race to beat Franklin's Kathy Ryan in the 600 at a new Hornet record pace of 1:37.63 and then anchoring the first place 4x400 relay team.

Broyles etched her name in the MHS record book in winning the 300 (at 40.71 seconds), while the Hornets claimed 16 key points in the event as a result of Kelly Coughlin taking third place.

**The NORTH ATTLEBORO Rocketeers had to settle for third place with 56 points, two points behind runner-up Oliver Ames. Rocketeer senior captain Julianne Cappadonna secured 10 points and a first place finish by winning the 55 dash in a personal best time of 7.38 seconds. In addition, she won the non-scoring high jump event and ran the opening leg for the first place non-scoring 4x200 relay team.

Kristy Deininger took eight individual points for North by finishing second in the 55 hurdles (8.76).

**The KING PHILIP Warriors took fourth place, garnering 13 of its 19 points with a trio of juniors claiming spots in the shot put event. Katie Kelleher finished in second place at 31-11/2.

**Shannon Cunningham took second in both the 300 meters and the non-scoring long jump for FOXBORO, while also running the opening leg for the non-scoring runner-up 4x200 relay team.
