'Daring' jewelry heist in Wrentham

WRENTHAM - More than $20,000 in jewelry was stolen from a Wrentham Village Premium Outlets shop during a daring heist last week, police said.

The thieves smashed the front window of Ultra Diamonds about midnight last Wednesday, entered the store and smashed several glass display cabinets, Detective Lt. William McGrath said Monday.

Rings and necklaces were among the items reported stolen.

Police are trying to identify the suspects by sending evidence at the crime scene to the state crime lab for fingerprint and DNA testing, McGrath said.

Surveillance video from the store is being reviewed as well, he said, to "see if any characters were walking out of other stores, particularly the high-end stores." Wrentham police initially investigated the incident with help from a state Department of Corrections canine, state police crime services and Plainville and Norfolk police.

McGrath and Patrolman Scott Ellis now are handling the investigation.

McGrath said no similar crimes have been reported recently.

"There doesn't appear to be any kind of a pattern," he said.

McGrath said it's the first jewelry store heist he recalls in Wrentham, and "nothing this daring."

The only jewelry stores in town are at the mall, on Route 1A at Interstate 495, he said.

Neither the mall management, nor the jewelry store would comment on the heist.

" A smash and grab is actually the least risky of thefts.
The perp probably had a 4WD vehicle used for escape out the back way. "

" A smash-and-grab in the middle of the night at a shopping plaza is NOT a daring heist. Daring means adventurous, bold, prepared to take risks. There was nothing risky here - the "security guard" was probably in another part of the complex. "
