Mansfield's Callanan an All-American
Top Headlines Callanan placed fifth in the 110 hurdles at the National High School Meet held Friday in North Carolina. "He ran well above his seeding," said MHS coach Julie Collins. "There was a strong headwind or else he would have come close to his goal, which was to break 14 seconds. Just to make the meet is phenomenal, then to place fifth is something else, considering that the southern states always dominate." Callanan and his family drove the 20 hours to attend the meet and he made it worth the while, running a 14.26 seconds in the preliminaries and then a 14.29 in the finals. Ironically, it was Callanan's first "loss" of the season after he won the Division title, Massachusetts title and then the New England Championships last weekend. He also ran the 400 hurdles for the second time, clocking a 55.55. "It's a great way to finish a career. It was his first loss, if you want to call it that, but he'll take it," added Collins. Callanan joins Ryan Collins as the two Hornets to earn All-American status. And speaking of Collins, the former Mansfield standout competed in the Junior Nationals Friday night and placed second in the 5,000 meters to earn a trip to the World Junior Championships, which will be held in Poland. The meet, held at Ohio State University, saw Collins run a 14:46.50 for second. Collins had already run a 14:12 to meet Worlds time standings and he needed a high placement to qualify.
