Post 312 still unbeaten after tie

LAKEVILLE - The South Attleboro American Legion played home run derby Friday night, but it was the longball that cost Post 312 a win against Lakeville.

Despite slugging a season-high three homers, South Attleboro had to settle for an 8-8 tie with Lakeville as the home team pulled even with a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh.

South Attleboro is still undefeated and atop the Zone 9 standings at 6-0-1.

"Defensively we were shoddy again early and we let them hang around," said South Attleboro coach John Pelland, whose team is 6-0-2 overall. "We came through with the bats again, though. They were a scrappy team and they kept coming back. We've played better than this before and we will play better again."

Unlike Thursday's game against fellow unbeaten Norton, where South Attleboro gave up three unearned runs in the first inning, Post 312 got off to a much better start in this one, putting up four runs in the top of the first. Greg Najarian highlighted the four-run first with a two-run homer, part of a 3-for-3, two runs scored, two RBI day. Matt Boulter made it back-to-back homers in the first as he went deep. South Attleboro's other blast was off the bat of Ryan Lee, who connected with a two-run shot in the fourth. Lee ended up 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI, while Boulter was 2-for-4 with a run scored and three driven in.

However, the offensive fireworks at Apponequet Regional High weren't done as the home team used the long ball to pull even in its last at-bat. Mike McGonigle's two-run homer tied the score at 8-all, but Greg Dusel got out of further damage as he got a couple of strikeouts and a pop-up to end the game.

South Attleboro plays again today (1 p.m.) at Fall River Post 314.

Norfolk 2, Norwood 1

NORFOLK - Drew Leenhouts pitched six strong innings as Post 335 held off rival Norwood.

Leenhouts gave up four hits and walked five but struck out seven in picking up the win. He walked the leadoff man in the seventh and Norfolk coach Mark Gafur went to Pat Walsh, who got the save despite making things even more interesting.

Walsh issued a walk to the first batter he faced and then a sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third. Gafur had Walsh intentionally walk the next batter to load the bases then Norfolk got a game-ending double play, a liner to shortstop Taylor Larson, who threw to third baseman Sam Adler to get the runner there.

Norfolk scored one run in the fourth as Larson had a one-out single and scored on Adler's double. What proved to be the game-winning run for Norfolk came across in the fifth as Chris Horne had a leadoff triple and he scored on a safety squeeze by Joe Tornabene.

Post 335 (now 5-2-1) hosts Canton later today (5 p.m.).

Foxboro 3, Stoughton 3 STOUGHTON - Only rain was able to slow Foxboro's momentum as Post 93 recovered from an early 3-0 deficit to forge a tie with host Stoughton Friday night.

The game was called after five innings because of rain and lightning.

"We started out on the short end and we felt like this was one we could win the way we came back. Had we played another inning or two I think we would have won," said Foxboro coach Paul Dumas, whose team is 3-3-2 overall.

A pair of unearned runs in the first and another unearned run in the fourth had Foxboro in a 3-0 hole. However, Post 93 got all three of the runs back with a fifth-inning rally. Jeff Caparell singled and Joe Clagg walked before Joe Nixon reached on an infield squibber, Caparell hustling all the way from second base to score.

John Garabedian then delivered the big hit for Foxboro, a two-run single to right that saw Nixon make another great baserunning play by sliding in safely on a close play at the plate.

Chuck Erickson started on the mound for Foxboro but lasted just 21/3 innings as he had to leave after being struck on his non-pitching hand with a line drive. Erickson is the second Foxboro pitcher to go down after being hit with a line drive as Brian Swanton had to leave a game earlier in the week after being struck in the shin. Brian Saffelle came on for Erickson and pitched 22/3 innings of solid relief. Saffelle didn't allow a hit, walked just one and gave up an unearned run while striking out one.

Shortstop Mike Farrell also had a solid game in his return to the Foxboro lineup as he had four assists and a nice turn on a fifth-inning double play.

Foxboro is back in action today (5 p.m.), home against Dedham.

Norton 3, Berkley 2

NORTON - Nick Salvo provided four-plus innings of scoreless relief and the Norton bats came alive in the fifth in snapping a two-game losing streak.

Brandon Halacy pitched 22/3 innings to start for Norton before giving way to Salvo, who held Berkley to the two runs. Then in the fifth, Norton put together a string of hits for three runs.

Sean Ryan singled, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball before scoring on a Jonathan Palmer sacrifice. Andrew McCarty then singled and Steve Loud walked before pinch hitter Josh Jolly delivered the big blow, a two-run double to the fence in left-center. Salvo pitched a 1-2-3 seventh, getting a strikeout to end the game.

On Friday night, Devin Askew pitched a gem for Norton but was out-dueled by his counterpart Tyler White and Westport rallied in the seventh for the walk-off win, 3-2 the final.

Askew scattered eight his and didn't walk a batter in his 61/3 innings of work. However, he ended up on the short end of the score as Westport scored the winning run in the seventh on a hit batsman, a passed ball and an overthrow to third base after a flyball out. Askew finished with one strikeout while White had 14 strikeouts and four walks for Westport.

Norton left seven runners on base but did get off to a good start, scoring its two runs in the first inning. ndrew McCarty and Jolly had RBI singles for Norton.

At 5-2, Norton visits Acushnet this evening (7).
