Attorney scoffs that police made 'big production' out of search for defendant
ATTLEBORO - The subject of a city manhunt was ordered held in jail without bail Thursday after pleading innocent in Attleboro District Court to domestic assault, unlawful possession of ammunition and drug charges.
Samuel J. St. Angelo, 18, of 146 South Ave. in Attleboro, was sought by police in a massive search Wednesday involving a state police helicopter and police dogs because authorities feared he was armed.
But St. Angelo's lawyer, Brian Roman of North Attleboro, argued his client should be released on bail, saying the police made a "big production" out of the manhunt in what started out as a domestic dispute. He argued no one saw his client with a gun and no weapon was recovered.
The series of events was set off around 2 a.m. Wednesday when police were flagged down on North Main Street by the father of St. Angelo's girlfriend. He told officers his daughter called him on his cellphone to say she was assaulted by St. Angelo, according to court records.
Police responded to the apartment of the girlfriend, Stephanie Caruso, 20, of 13 Hillcrest Drive in Attleboro, where they say they found nine rounds of .45-caliber ammunition in a nightstand, a marijuana plant and drug paraphernalia in a bedroom.
Roman said the rounds of ammunition police found are possibly "duds" and noted that the girlfriend was also charged.
According to court records and police, Caruso will be summoned to court at a later date for unlawful possession of ammunition and marijuana possession-related charges.
Caruso told police she had been struck in the leg by St. Angelo, but declined medical treatment. Police chased a man they believed to be St. Angelo that night but he eluded them.
Around 4 p.m., police began the massive search after they learned from witnesses and residents of the Hillcrest Oaks public housing project that St. Angelo was known to carry a gun, prosecutor Jessica Lennon said.
State and local police and two state police dogs apprehended St. Angelo around 7:30 p.m., hiding in bushes behind an automotive repair business at 807 South Main St. near St. Stephen's Cemetery.
Lennon asked Judge Robert E. Baylor to revoke his bail on a previous case and order him held in jail without bail. The probation department is also seeking a probation violation hearing.
He is due back in court June 24.

I won't apologize for criticizing spelling and grammar. You are be judged by these things. How else can you effectively communicate if others cannot understand your writing? My grandmother and many of her siblings did not finish high school, yet their command of the English language far exceeded that of many college graduates I know. Their handwriting was a heck of a lot better than mine too. "

What did anyone who is involved in this issue do for the child? If you do not own the property that you are entering, or have not been given permission by it's owners it is considered breaking and entering- (I apologize for punctuation- spell check cant help me here!) I make an effort to not end up in the poor house- and hold 2 jobs and go to school full time to make myself better- Anyone can do it- barred from a handicap or physical disability. I see no reason that public schools would not have taught you to read and write, punctuation is tricky, but run on sentences are blatant and obvious. Take some college courses and catch up with the rest of your class. "

Again I ask everyone - when is assault considered "serious"?
As far as the folks living in the projects, it's been a long time since I went there - but there were some good families there. I also met some really ignorant, drug-using scum living in the wealthy neighborhoods. Location has nothing to do with it. There are good and bad people everywhere. "

I was just saying how if a post by someone didn't make sense or words were spelled wrong, they must be from the projects. Or let's ask them to post comments in english. Or he probably only has a GED.
And Again, like I posted in the past.. never once was this called a domestic assualt, it was a dispute. I'm not saying he was right to do anything to the girl, I was pointing out that this whole situation is getting carried away. "

I disagree with the majority of the people on this site about 99% of the time, so I'd be the last to defend anyones comments. Still, read from the bottom to the top, I didn't see one post pointing a finger at Sam because of where he was from or anything mentioning his race, religion, hair color, height/weight? The majority of the responses were replies back to Rick, who has his own bag of issues to deal with. Nobody here brought up the projects, he did. You can't post on a public forum and butcher pretty much every word in every sentence and not expect people to comment on your spelling.
The fact that this guy kicked his girlfriend isn't the issue, he ran and was said to have a weapon. Should the APD just leave him alone, let him run away and hope he doesn't hurt anyone? What if he did hurt someone? What if he walked into Dodgeville and shot someone with that gun; the same people saying the APD went to far would be looking for the head of the cops that let the kid run without looking for him. "

I think calling this an assault is exzaggerating a little bit. She was kicked in the leg,(that's right from her(Stef) mouth) and needed no medical attention. I don't condone that, and its not right but it was made out to be like she was beaten up bad and needed seriously medical attention.
All I was trying to get at was we've gotten way off topic. No need to degrade people for where they live, or what type of education they have. I have a child out of wedlock, many people do in todays society.. I'm an excellent mother and my boyfriend is a great dad. I was just saying we all do things that he listed but we all make mistakes! "

I think "Realist" was rebutting "randykfx" that anyone who follows the law is an "angel". The behaviors listed by "Realist" are what we, who grew up in the 70's, were told was normal and expected. A joke, no. Just wondering when society deteriorated to the point where we defend someone who allegedly assaulted a woman - a mother - then tries to run. The courts will decide, sure, but when did this become acceptable. I agree that the child needs to be taken care of or we will have another generation thinking it's okay to assault women. "
proudmom3 wrote on Jun 3, 2008 11:31 AM:
And somehow you have turned this into a joke. Who cares if someone graduates and gets a diploma, and goes an gets a GED. Or if your from the projects or live in $400, 000 house. It doesnt matter if your a good citizen, if you go to church, if you vote, or what sports team you cheer for. This isn't about any of you!
Act like adults, keep this poor child who was living in a house that obviously wasn't safe in your thoughts.
It will come out in the end if Sam did anything wrong, its not up to us or The Sun Chronicle to decide. "

But to respond to a few points --
1. Going into the little shed is breaking and entering, even if you're a kid.
2. The woman was arrested regarding the ammunition and plants.
3.Have you ever been involved in a search in a wooded area for someone who WANTED to be found? that's difficult. Finding someone who's trying to hide in that area is very tough. I'm glad the police kept at it. Three hours isn't bad for the task
4. As for your eloquent, Clarence Darrow style, defense of your friend, remember this from Hamlet "
* The lady doth protest too much, methinks." Please have it translated from English if needed. "
