Locals to take aim at U.S. Open
Top Headlines For football players, it's the Super Bowl. And for golfers, the highlight of one's career could very well be playing in the U.S. Open. Some familiar names to the local golfing scene will be teeing it up Monday morning at TPC Boston in hopes of playing next month against Tiger Woods and the world's best golfers. A local qualifying round for the U.S. Open will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the PGA Tour-owned course off Route 140 in Norton. Among those in the field are a pair of Attleboro Area Golf Association winners, Jim Renner of Plainville and Keith Allcock of South Attleboro. Renner, a three-time AAGA Open winner, made his PGA Tour debut in March when he qualified for the PODS Championship in Tampa. The 24-year-old graduate of Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro and Johnson & Wales University in Florida missed the cut at the $5.3 tournament. Renner, who owns the course record at Highland Country Club in Attleboro, this summer will be playing in the Hooters Tour, satellite events to the PGA Tour. He tees off at 7:57 a.m. on Monday. Allcock, the pro at Firefly Golf Course in Seekonk, is also a former Bishop Feehan standout. Ironically, he defeated Renner's father, John "Buck" Renner, for the 1995 AAGA Open title. He tees off at 10:48 a.m. Two other golfers with local ties, Tom Johnson of Plainville and amateur Matthew Byrne of Norfolk, who competed in the 2007 qualifier, will also be competing on Monday. Johnson tees off at 10:30 a.m., Byrne at 12:18 p.m. The qualifier at the TPC Boston - host of the PGA Tour's Deutsche Bank Championship, one of pro golf's playoff events - is free and open to the public. Tees times range from 7:30 a.m. to 12:18 p.m. Of Monday's 99 entrants, the top three will move on to a sectional qualifying tournament. Winners there can compete for the U.S. Open, to be held June 12-15 at Torrey Pines Country Club in San Diego. MIKE KIRBY can be reached at 508-236-0344 or at mkirby@thesunchronicle.com.
