SOFTBALL: Holland's effort not enough


ATTLEBORO - Kayla Holland blanked the Blue Raiders of Somerset High through the final five innings, but the Bishop Feehan High softball team was unable to support her pitching effort with any timely hitting in losing 2-1 Thursday.

Somerset used a walk and two hits in the second inning to plate its lone runs against Holland. The Blue Raiders totaled six hits off Holland and had runners on base against the Shamrocks in all but the first and fourth innings.

The Shamrocks totaled seven hits, but went scoreless through five innings. In the sixth, Kerrin DeGirolamo and Jacki Atkinson both singled and along with Holland reaching base on an error, the bases were jammed. Cary Kaczowski stroked an RBI-single for the Shamrocks.

However, Somerset ended the threat on a 1-2-3 double play. Feehan left runners stranded at second and third base in the first inning and was retired in order in the seventh.

The Shamrocks (6-7) entertain Attleboro High today.

Dighton-Rehoboth 6, Fairhaven 3 FAIRHAVEN - Kyla Puccini hurled five scoreless innings in a relief pitching role, striking out seven, to preserve a South Coast Conference victory for D-R.

Jen Lundstrom started on the mound and allowed three runs over two frames to the Blue Devils. Ashley Nunes supplied the Falcon power with two hits and four RBI out of the No. 6 spot of the batting order. She had a two-run single in the third inning and a two-out, two-run double to the center field fence in the fifth inning.

The Falcons took the lead in the first as Tori Rocha doubled and scored on a Kayla Cartin sacrifice flyball.

Puccini retired the Fairhaven side in order in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, allowing just three baserunners during her duty. D-R (11-1, 10-0 SCC) next entertains Greater New Bedford Monday.

Seekonk 12, Greater New Bedford 4

NEW BEDFORD - Lauren Medeiros belted a two-run homer in the second inning and Krista Chauvin smacked a three-run homer in the fourth inning as Seekonk belted the Bears to win the South Coast Conference game.

The Warriors (9-3, 8-3 SCC) qualified for the MIAA Tournament with the victory.

Chauvin drove in six runs with three hits among the 13 that Seekonk totaled. Lauren Correia and Medeiros also each had three hits.

Seekonk used four hits to plate four first inning runs to support starting pitcher Samantha Howarth. Brianne Nolette worked the final four innings in relief. Seekonk travels to Wareham Monday with a 7 p.m. first-pitch start.

Canton 5, North Attleboro 4

NORTH ATTLEBORO - The Hockomock League cellar-dwellars came up with a run in the seventh inning on a walk and two hits to upset North Attleboro.

Stephanie Burns and Sarah Brown each clubbed three hits for North, which had nine overall. The Rocketeers rallied in the seventh inning as Burns singled and Brown doubled with two outs, but a flyball ended the the threat and the game.

Nicole Hardy belted a two-run homer with Brown aboard (via a triple) in the first inning for North. Canton, however, rallied for three runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. But North came back in the bottom of the frame to tie the score on another two-out rally.

Burns tripled and after Brown drew a walk, Toni Zagami laced an RBI-single down the left field line.

The Rocketeers play the first of five straight on the road Monday at Franklin.

Bellingham 8, Norton 5

BELLINGHAM - The Blackhawks scored four runs in both the first and sixth innings to hold off Norton in winning the Tri-Valley League game. Bellingham used three hits and two Lancers errors to overcome a 5-4 deficit in the sixth.

Norton, which lost 11-1 earlier in the season to Bellingham, took a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning when Ashley LaRochelle double and scored on a two-out passed ball.

Norton had scored a trio of runs in the second inning on two walks and three hits, including RBI-singles from Stephanie Bryant, Eryn Dion and LaRochelle.

The Lancers return to action Monday at home against Medway.
