Norton sets forum on commuter rail plans

NORTON - In an attempt to get more details about a potential train line through town, selectmen and the town's legislative delegation will co-sponsor a May 29 public meeting on the matter.

Selectmen voted unanimously Thursday night to schedule the South Coast rail line meeting and invite Attleboro and Taunton mayors and city councilors and Mansfield selectmen.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Norton Middle School and will be moderated by Town Manager James Purcell.

The state Executive Office of Transportation recently released five alternative routes for trains to connect the Fall River and New Bedford area with Boston and the Attleboro route - which runs through Norton - is on the list for further study.

"I think it's important to keep this on the front burner and make sure everybody understands how important this is," selectmen Chairman Robert Kimball said.

Heather Graf, coordinator of Citizens Concerned About Tracks, told selectmen she expects project manager Kristina Egan and engineering consultants Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc. to present more information about the analysis used to determine the alternatives. Graf said there are actually nine alternatives, four of which would pass through Attleboro.
