Seekonk voters to decide town's budget on May 19

SEEKONK - The fate of the $39.6 million budget for the next fiscal year will be in the hands of voters at the May 19 town meeting.

The bulk of that amount, $19.5 million, is designated for the schools. That figure is $1.2 million higher than the current year's budget, and includes all-day kindergarten classes, 16 new positions, an in-house suspension program at Seekonk High School, and a bus lease.

Not included are fees for all-day kindergarten classes or user fees for athletics and transportation.

Town meeting voters also will be asked to decide a number of cash issues, including voting whether:

To transfer $576,000 from free cash to the town's capital stabilization fund. To spend $543,626 from that fund to be used for a dozen expenditures, including $54,000 for the purchase of a dump truck for the Department of Public Works, $100,000 to pay for architectural and engineering services and preparation of bid documents for a senior/community center.

To spend $83,000 to install new sprinkler systems at fields at Cole Street, Water Lane and North School.

To spend $63,000 to replace lighting fixtures in the public library.

The police and fire departments are also requesting funds to be appropriated or transferred from designated funds for the lease and or purchases of new EMS vehicles and police vehicles.

At last week's joint meeting of the "Quad Board" - the selectmen, finance committee, school committee and capital improvement committee reviewed the entire warrant.
