NORTON - Norton's new full-day kindergarten program has most parents' support, according to a new survey.

However, 42 percent said the $2,500 tuition would prevent or deter them from entering the full-day program's lottery. Another 37 percent said the cost would not deter them. And 21 percent said they are unsure.

School officials surveyed 229 parents of kindergartners and received 138 surveys back, Superintendent Patricia Ansay told the school committee Monday night.

Parents with children currently in the full-day program were asked if they would recommend such a session. The responses: 34 percent yes, 1 percent no, and 66 percent not applicable.

Norton's kindergarten program will be 60 percent full day and 40 percent half day next year. The school committee last month approved three new full-day classes: two at Solmonese Elementary School, and one at Nourse Elementary School. Norton also will have four half-day sessions. Norton currently has one full-day session at Nourse and two at Solmonese. At Nourse, there are 23 full-day students and 42 half-day students. At Solmonese, there are 46 full-day students and 116 half-day students.

Kindergarten registration will be held Friday, April 4.

Full-day sessions are available by registering for a lottery drawing on a tuitioned basis.

The application deadline is April 18.
