Norton may be raceless

NORTON - Town Clerk Diane Casagni is seeing a "lack of interest" in the April 29 annual town election.

At Casagni's request, selectmen reminded voters Thursday night that nomination papers are available only until 5 p.m. on March 7, which is two weeks away.

Late this week, the ballot featured no races. And there were no candidates for two three-year seats, one each, on the water and sewer commission and the planning board.

Water and Sewer Chairman Donald Brown said Thursday night he is undecided about seeking re-election. Planning board member Duane Knapp will not pursue another term.

Papers signed by at least 50 registered voters must be submitted to the board of registrars for certification by 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 11. The only candidates are all incumbents: Selectwoman Mary Steele, school committee member Margaret Werner, Assessor Joan DeCosta, Town Moderator Phillip Warren Jr., planning board member Joanne Haracz, and housing authority member Robert Salvo Sr.

All are three-year terms except the housing post, which is five years.

Last year's ballot featured two races, for two seats each on the board of selectmen and school committee.

There also was one ballot question: should the town collector-treasurer be appointed? The question had passed at the previous annual town meeting.
