NORTON - The town is again leading the opposition to a Boston to New Bedford and Fall River commuter rail route through Norton and Attleboro.
Selectmen voted 3-1 Thursday night to pass a resolution both declaring the opposition and endorsing a route through Stoughton.
Selectmen also voted to place a request for $30,000 for the local fight on the Oct. 15 fall annual town meeting warrant.
The money was allocated for the purpose during the first train fight in 1995, said Heather Graf, coordinator of the Citizens Concerned About Tracks.
However, Graf said the money was never spent - only activists' dollars were - and was ultimately transferred into a Shpack account, where it is not needed.
Train activists might not spend any of the money if town meeting approves the transfer, she said.
Gov. Deval Patrick this summer approved a plan to fund a study that would bring the trains from Boston to New Bedford and Fall River through Norton and Attleboro, Graf said.
"We were at the forefront of the battle back in 1995. We led the charge. I'm asking you quite simply to do that again," Graf said.
