LETTER: Give North another chance at charter

To the editor: With the recent discovery that the North Attleboro Electric Department was not in compliance with the state laws of Massachusetts, it is time to pressure the selectmen to put forth the town charter again for voter approval on the next ballot, and the next after that if necessary.

I ask that every resident become registered to vote. We should have a town charter which allows us to run our government more efficiently with a town manager, exclusively responsible to the selectmen and vot ers for accountability and efficiency. If every voter in town does his duty and votes, we can defeat those who have vested interests in keeping town government status quo and therefore not working at its peak performance. If we do not change this government for the better we, the taxpayers, will bear the brunt by higher fees, taxes and higher utility bills.

For example, in the last year my electrical bill has been very high, even though I have been very careful in conserving energy. I can only assume my higher bills are due to make up for NAED's losses with its latest venture. If we had had a town manager, to whom the NAED report ed, this could not have happened. Our present town government has departments which operate autonomously, and NAED is one, so that the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing literally. It is a house divided against itself, and we have to vote to make it a whole house so that every room con nects to itself, and we do that with a town manager. This town will be approaching 30,000 population in the next few years and I hope before that time we are able to have a town manager in operation.

Mary Carrozza, North Attleboro
